2012 Young Authors’ Writing Project Summer Camp
The Columbus Young Authors’ Writing Project is a two-week long summer day camp that offers a unique enrichment opportunity for students entering grades 4 – 12 who enjoy writing and have a serious interest in improving their writing.
Who are the participants?
The program is designed for students who
- are willing to work to improve their writing skills
- are willing to share their writing with others
- are seeking to develop their own style
- want to explore a variety of writing genres and experiences
What is expected of participants?
During the two-week summer camp, students will experience
- lots of daily writing time in a safe, supportive environment
- instruction from dedicated, qualified instructors
- unique and challenging writing assignments
- sharing their writing in small groups of teachers and peers
- an integration of activities involving the arts and technology
- opportunities for computer use in writing and publication
- an author visit
- a field trip to inspire writing
- receipt of a journal, book and t-shirt for each
- publication of works in a camp anthology
- a lot of fun!
Visiting authors
We have been honored to have several prestigious Ohio authors and poets including Sharon Draper, J. Patrick Lewis, and Margaret Peterson Haddix. The authors spend the afternoon with us sharing their own experiences as a writer as well as tips for us in our own writing. In addition, students receive an autographed copy of one of the authors’ books.
Who teaches at this summer camp?
YAWP Summer Camp teachers are exemplary educators from area schools who are fellows of the National Writing Project and have been trained through the Columbus Area Writing Project program. They are a dedicated group that share a passion for teaching writing, are committed to helping young writers grow in confidence and proficiency in the craft, and are writers themselves.
When is the camp and what is the cost?
- June11th-June 22nd
- Monday – Friday
- 1:00 – 4:00 pm
- The Learning Place, 1100 Kinnear Road
- $200 per student – Scholarships available
- No transportation provided.
