Kindergarten Award Information

Deadline for Nominations: June 1, 2017

Enid Paskes Bloome taught Kindergarten for most of her teaching career of 35 years. During this time she delighted in using children’s literature and made it a large part of her curriculum. Apart from using delightful books with her students in her classroom, she also wrote two books for children, Dogs Don’t Belong on Beds and The Water We Drink. When she died in 2006, a memorial fund was set up to honor her memory. Selwyn Bloome, Enid’s husband, was been the force behind the Kindergarten Children’s Literature Book Award until his death in 2012. In honor of them, the Enid and Selwyn Bloome fund was founded to fund an annual award  to an outstanding Kindergarten teacher with the expectation that the money be used to impact significantly the teacher’s classroom library collection.

The Bloome Award will be awarded to an excellent kindergarten teacher who instills a love of reading and writing in students through the use of quality children’s literature in unique and innovative ways. This teacher’s classroom exemplifies a rich environment for literacy that makes quality literature and the writers who create this literature come to life for young children.
